Frequently asked questions
Are these state maps free to print?
Yes. Every map is free to print and download with no signup. Free to print for personal, classroom, church and senior-activity use. Not for resale. The boundaries themselves are public-domain U.S. Census Bureau data.
Where do the map boundaries come from?
From the U.S. Census Bureau's cartographic boundary files, 2023 vintage: state outlines at 1:5,000,000 scale and county boundaries at 1:20,000,000. They are generalized for printing and classroom use, not for legal or survey purposes.
How many counties are there in the United States?
The 2023 Census boundary files list 3,143 counties and county-equivalents across the 50 states (3,144 including the District of Columbia). Texas has the most with 254; Delaware has the fewest with 3. Louisiana calls them parishes, Alaska has boroughs and census areas, and Virginia counts 38 independent cities alongside its 95 counties.
Why are some counties numbered instead of named?
A county name is printed only where it fits inside the county at 4 to 8 point type, on one or two lines. Smaller or narrower areas get a number instead and are listed in a key under the map. Across all 50 states, 2,924 of 3,143 names fit and 219 are numbered.
